“Our dream is for the industry to evolve into a space where everyone feels represented and valued”, said Ji Seok, from Big Ocean in an exclusive interview with K4US. With such a powerful dream, the group is set to be the new beacon of the generation, guiding music towards diversity.
Formed by Lee Chan Yeon (main rapper), Park Hyun Jin (main vocal) and Kim Ji Seok (main dancer), the trio debuted on April 20, The Day of People with Disabilities in South Korea. Since then, they have released three singles, including “Slow”, a track featuring Young K, from DAY6.
The three members feel the responsibility and impact that their existence has on k-pop and global music. After all, before debuting as artists, they are human beings with individualities that are not limiting, something the group emphasizes during the interview, but rather unique strengths.
Check out the full interview:
1 – Congratulations on your debut! “GLOW” is fresh and carries a beautiful message of hope. Did you have any issues or curious situations in the process of making and releasing the remake of H.O.T’s “HOPE”?
Hyunjin: Thank you so much! Working on “GLOW,” our rendition of H.O.T’s classic “HOPE,” was both an honor and a challenge. Capturing the essence of such an iconic song while adding our own touch was something we took very seriously. There were moments when we had to carefully consider how to stay true to the original message while also infusing it with our unique style. However, working through those challenges made the final result even more meaningful for us. We hope listeners can feel the love and dedication we poured into “GLOW.”
2 – Big Ocean’s official debut took place on April 20th, which corresponds to the National Day of People with Disabilities in South Korea. Did you expect all this support and the international repercussions for the group?
Chanyeon: The timing of our debut on such a significant day was thoughtfully planned, and it holds deep meaning for us. We wanted to send a strong message of inclusion and representation. However, the overwhelming support we received, both locally and internationally, was beyond our expectations. We are incredibly grateful for the way people have embraced our mission and music. It motivates us to continue working hard to connect with even more people around the world.
3 – Still talking about “BLOW”, the song is simply addictive! And you are recording challenges with many different artists. We want to know what is the most fun and least fun part from the process of creating a new track to the promotions?
Hyunjin: Thank you! Recording “BLOW” was such a fun experience, especially collaborating with other artists for the challenges. The most fun part is definitely seeing how different artists bring their unique style to our song, adding a fresh perspective to the choreography and performance. The least fun part, if we had to choose, might be the waiting period between recording and the release—it’s hard to keep the excitement in check!
4 – How do you feel being part of such an important group for the industry and people with some type of disability? Always highlighting that disability is not an imperfection, but a strong characteristic.
Chanyeon: Being part of Big Ocean is both an honor and a responsibility. While our primary role is as entertainers, we believe that with this platform comes the additional responsibility to advocate for inclusivity and diversity. We aim to show that differing abilities are not limitations, but rather unique strengths that can inspire and uplift others. Through our music and actions, we are committed to breaking down stereotypes and demonstrating that everyone, regardless of their abilities, has the potential to achieve extraordinary things. It’s incredibly rewarding to know that our efforts can make a meaningful impact in people’s lives.
5 – Unfortunately, K-pop ends up being exclusionary towards those who do not fit into the standards established by South Korean culture. Big Ocean is a pioneer in embracing inclusion and accessibility with the proposal to sing using Korean Sign Language (KSL), American Sign Language (ASL), and International Sign Language (IS). Do you believe that the industry can change based on you?
Jiseok: We pray that our efforts can serve as a catalyst for change in the industry. K-pop has an incredible global reach, and we believe it’s time for that influence to extend to embracing greater inclusivity and diversity. By integrating Korean Sign Language (KSL), American Sign Language (ASL), and International Sign Language (IS) into our performances, we hope to pave the way for others to follow. Our dream is for the industry to evolve into a space where everyone feels represented and valued. We believe that as more artists embrace these practices, K-pop can become a beacon of inclusivity, welcoming all voices and stories.
6 – You have already expressed the desire to hold fan meetings, shows with fans and to be able to communicate in sign language. Can we expect any tours soon?
Chanyeon: We were overjoyed to meet some of our Pados in person at our recent fan meeting—it was a truly unforgettable experience that we will cherish forever. As for future tours, while we don’t have specific dates to share just yet, we’re working hard to make it happen. So please stay tuned—there are many exciting things on the horizon!
7 – Brazil is well known for its affection and dedication to artists and you also have fans here! Is there a message you would like to leave for the people who follow you on the other side of the globe?
Big Ocean: To all our Brazilian Pados, we want to express our deepest gratitude from the bottom of our hearts. Your love and support mean everything to us, and we are truly touched by each one of you. We dream of the day we can visit Brazil and share our music with you in person. Until then, please continue to support us, and know that you are always in our hearts and thoughts!
8 – And now, please leave a message specifically for the people with hearing loss (hearing disability) who, at the same time, have K-pop as their favorite musical genre.
Hyunjin: To our Pados who experience hearing challenges, please know that your love for K-pop is deeply cherished and never goes unnoticed. We are committed to making sure our music and performances connect with you through sign language and other inclusive ways. You are an essential part of our community, and we’re profoundly grateful to have you with us on this journey.
